Magazine Cover Learner Response

 1) Add your finished magazine cover as a JPEG image.

2) Type up your feedback from your teacher. If you've received this by email, you can copy and paste it across - WWW and EBIs. You don't need to include a mark or grade if you don't want to.

Mark out of 15 for Media Language: 12

Estimated A Level coursework grade: A / B

WWW: This is a seriously impressive cover in terms of photography and brand identity – I genuinely had to check which was your product and which were the real Marvin covers! That is an incredibly good sign – the requirement for A* at A Level is ‘approaching professional standards’ and in terms of photography and brand identity you are absolutely approaching that standard. Indeed, there are just a couple of elements that we need to look at to reach the top 13-15 level.

EBI: You mention this in your evaluation but the lack of regular magazine cover conventions on your chosen brand does make it more difficult to award a top level. That is something to consider when planning your real production work next year. I can also see you’ve discussed the way you’ve put your cover model over the magazine title as this is a common magazine cover convention. This is undoubtedly true but if you look at the other Marvin covers you have posted it is not a convention of that particular magazine and we genuinely need to hit that level of attention to detail when producing our coursework.

3) Consider your mark against the mark scheme above. What are the strengths of your production based on the the mark scheme? Think about magazine cover conventions and the media language techniques you have used to communicate with your audience (e.g. mise-en-scene, camera shot etc.)

The use of the overlay and barcode match up with the key conventions of many magazines while making it identical to the other Marvin magazine if not better than the professional one.

4) Look at the mark scheme again. What can you do to move your mark higher and, if required, move up a level?

Simply choose a more complicated magazine or use more key conventions.

5) What would be one piece of advice you would give a student about to start the same magazine cover project you have just completed?

Make sure you get and use a high quality picture/image because it can easily ruin the concept with bad quality as it neglects the professional aspect.
