Audience theory 2 - The effects debate

  1) Social learning theory has been criticised for simplifying the causes of violence in society. Do you think the media is responsible for anti-social behaviour and violence? Given that so many people use media and that some people appear quite content to be violent despite having good social lives, I don't believe that the media is solely to blame for violence and antisocial behaviour. Nonetheless, there are a few individuals who are susceptible to being persuaded. 2) How is social learning theory relevant in the digital age? Are young people now learning behaviour from social media and the internet? Give examples. On social media, viewers watch and copy what they see. Nowadays, youth learn via social media because influential people are searching for impressionable youth with open minds. Drill artists have an impact on teenagers because they frequently discuss violence.  3) Research  three  examples of moral panic from the last 50 years. To what extent was the media responsible

MIGRAIN: Feminist theory

  1) What examples are provided from the two texts of the 'male gaze' (Mulvey)? One example is how Beyonce is objectified herself on the camera for male gaze. 2) Do texts such as these show there is no longer a need for feminism or are they simply sexism in a different form? I think these works demonstrate feminism in a different way rather than demonstrating that it is no longer necessary. This is because the women in these media items are portrayed as strong, etc., utilising their appearance as a weapon. 3) Choose three words/phrases from the glossary of the article and write their definitions on your blog. Para texts: Additional texts surrounding a  central text – trailers, reviews, posters, ads,  credit sequences, texts within the text etc.  Hyperreality:   the state of the world, according to Baudrillard, where nothing is real because everything we consume is filtered through the Media.  Simulacrum:  a likeness, or similarity; an image which replaces the reality with its r

Ideology: BBC Question Time analysis

  1) What examples of  binary opposition  can you suggest from watching this clip? Capitalism vs Libertarianism,  Rich vs Poor   2) What  ideologies  are on display in this clip? Liberationist beliefs advocate helping working class people because they are suffering the most. Part 2: Media Magazine reading Page 34: The World Of Mockingjay: Ideology, Dystopia And Propaganda 1) Read the article and summarise it in one sentence. Marxist theories can be used to explain this since the President controls them by instilling fear using propaganda and the media, the upper class rules and dominates the working class's life, and those in positions of power control ideas and resources. 2) What view of capitalist ideology is presented in the Hunger Games films? It demonstrates how the wealthy do not have to go through this method of murder and how they will be the safest group of all. 3) What do the Hunger Games films suggest about the power of the media to shape and influence ideological belief

MIGRAIN: Representing Ourselves - Identity In The Online Age

1) Read the article and summarise each section in one sentence, starting with the section 'Who are you?' Individuals could acquire identities, and it was encouraged for them to do so. Consumers were based on persuading their audiences with what they desired, and they were satisfied by the audiences (Blumler and Katz: Uses and Gratifications theory). As individuals began to express themselves in distinctive and original ways and to think for themselves as individuals, items helped shape their identities. In the 1970s and 1980s, it was discovered that branding was linked to personality and that consumers purchased goods that reflected their self-identity. We now have power over how the public perceives us thanks to the internet and the development of avatars. 2) List  three  brands you are happy to be associated with and explain how they reflect your sense of identity. I would personal say Apple, PlayStation and Estero 3) Do you agree with the view that modern media is all about
