1) Read the article and summarise it in one sentence.

In this essay, I will analyse how dystopian capitalism is portrayed in both the most recent Hunger Games movie and the entire series, highlighting areas where media theory can be most effectively used.

2) What view of capitalist ideology is presented in the Hunger Games films?

The Hunger Games paints a dismal picture of capitalism because it shows the power the wealthy have over the disadvantaged. It emphasises how individuals in positions of power are able to have complete control.

3) What do the Hunger Games films suggest about the power of the media to shape and influence ideological beliefs?

President Snow incites terror among the districts through propaganda and the media, primarily by broadcasting the current Hunger Games live on TV and putting previous ones on loop all the time to dissuade the populace from organising a revolution.

1) What are the four accepted ideological beliefs in western societies highlighted by the article?

• Families should come first for people.
• For money, people should put in a lot of effort.
• Women should take care of their beauty and act in a feminine manner.
• Good ought to triumph over evil.

2) What does Gramsci's theory of hegemony suggest about power and ideology in society?

Gransci characterised hegemony as a crucial way in which individuals in power maintain their rule through consent, rather than the use of force.

3) What does French theorist Louis Althusser suggest about ideology and consumerism?

The first is repressive state control, often known as "repressive state apparatuses" (RSAs), which is carried out by the key institutions of society, such as the government, army, police, courts, etc., which are controlled by the ruling class. These government organisations control social behaviour and intimidate the populace by force, harsh laws, and fear.

2: "Ideological State Apparatuses" (ISAs), including the family, the church, the media, and educational institutions. Instead of using terror to control and dominate, these less rigid organisations do it implicitly through social norms and "common sense" acceptance. This is similar to Gramsci's idea of hegemony, according to which the power of ideology comes primarily from consent rather than the use of force.

4) Do YOU agree with the idea behind They Live - that we are unthinkingly controlled by the media which is run in the interests of the economic elite? These are the big questions of A Level Media!

I believe that the media has a lot of power over us, but to what extent each individual will allow themselves to be mindlessly influenced depends on how frequently they use social media, how dependent they are on it, what ideas and values they hold.
