MIGRAIN: January assessment learner response

  1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

WWW: very solid question 1
EBI:Q2+3 needs a more detailed and balanced answer

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.
Q1) I guess I merely needed to elaborate on my response and explain in more detail how it leads to the "sexualization" of men and other things.

Q2) I may have mentioned how it could increase the company's earnings.

Q3) I may have discussed Ofcom and its significance and goals in relation to it.

Q4) I could have answered this question by mentioning the two-step flow model.

3) On a scale of 1-10 (1 = low, 10 = high), how much revision and preparation did you do for this assessment? You may also want to think here whether you had completed all the original blog tasks from last term before doing the assessment.

I would say about a 4, I think I got the right definitions just the wrong names and key words.

4) Look at your answer for Question 2. Did you manage to write about three different strategies and three different benefits? It's vital you read the question and follow it exactly.

I was able to write about all three types, however I could have done a better job of explaining two of them than the others.

5) Look at your answer for Question 3. Did you follow the question guidance and write about both the BBC and commercial broadcasters? What could you have added to this answer to reach a higher mark?

I wrote about both of them, but I feel like I could have gone into more detail about why individuals believed that newer technologies would replace the BBC and how, in the event that the BBC persisted, they would be able to maintain their position.

6) Now look over your mark, teacher comments and the mark scheme for Question 4 - the 20 mark essay question on media effects theory. Write a new paragraph for this question based on the suggested theories/answers in the mark scheme. Make sure it is an extensive, detailed paragraph focused on the question and offering examples from the wider media.

According to Gerbner's cultivation hypothesis, those who watch a lot of television may experience "mean world syndrome." At this point, the audience perceives society as being far more hostile and dangerous than it actually is. Because there are so many toxic individuals and toxic deeds being perpetrated, for instance, the news about the conflict in Russia and Ukraine may make the audience feel frightened. They subsequently begin to believe that everyone is like that as a result, leading them to become more wary of their surroundings.
