MIGRAIN: Introduction to Representation

 1) Why is representation an important concept in Media Studies?

When businesses are subject to regulation to guarantee a fair market and audience-appropriate content. They must be regulated to ensure that their output is appropriate and that one media industry doesn't control the market.

According to Barthes, "natrualization" of ideas conceals ideologies.

A media's coverage will either support or reject the stereotype. It is a dominant representation if it supports the stereotype. It qualifies as an alternative image if it rejects the stereotype.

The investigators are perceived as high class, formal-dressing individuals. This provides them a decent appearance and convinces the audience that they are competent in their work. The formal attire of detectives is a stereotype that frequently appears in films and TV shows. Paul's work on reception theory is related to this because detectives are traditionally shown as wearing formal attire. It is a dominant representation as a result.The detective who was suspended, however, has a scruffy appearance and his top shirt button is undone. The dishevelled appearance gives him the impression that he is going through a difficult moment.
