Media Regulation

 1) What is regulation and why do media industries need to be regulated?

Rules and regulations must be provided by regulatory systems to guarantee that organisations behave fairly.

2) What is OFCOM responsible for?

Our daily use and reliance on communications services are governed by Ofcom.

3) Look at the section on the OFCOM broadcasting code. Which do you think are the three most important sections of the broadca
sting code and why?

As OFCOM should be cautious with what they post or highlight on the internet depending on what audience views the programme, I think the broadcasting code's part on crime is crucial. In addition, particularly considering how some subjects, like a recent murder, can provoke moral terror among an audience.

4) Do you agree with OFCOM that Channel 4 was wrong to broadcast 'Wolverine' at 6.55pm on a Sunday evening? Why?

No, I disagree with OFCOM because non violent films like "Wolverine" is classified PG and doesn't have a lot of violent scenes, so it ought to be let to be broadcast and viewed by viewers on channel 4.

5) List five of the sections in the old Press Complaints Commission's Code of Practice.

1. Young people should be free to complete their time at school without unnecessary intrusion.
2. Pupils must not be approached or photographed at school without the permission of the school authorities.
3. The restrictions on intruding into privacy are particularly relevant to enquiries about individuals in hospitals or similar institutions
4. When reporting suicide, care should be taken to avoid excessive detail about the method used.
5. It is unacceptable to photograph individuals in private places without their consent.
6.The restrictions on intruding into privacy are particularly relevant to enquiries about individuals in hospitals or similar institutions.

6) Why was the Press Complaints Commission criticised?

This is because numerous media channels were disseminating material that would violate the PCC rule of conduct.

7) What was the Leveson enquiry and why was it set up?

An study into the "culture, practise, and ethics of the press" was conducted throughout 2011 and 2012, mostly as a result of the alleged phone hacking crisis. For illegally intercepting phone calls related to the royal family, Clive Goodman, the royal correspondent for the News of the World newspaper, and Glenn Mulcaire, a private investigator who worked for Goodman, were both sentenced to prison in January 2007.

8) What was the PCC replaced w
ith in 2014?

In 2014 PCC was replaced by the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO).

9) What is your opinion on press regulation? Is a free press an important part of living in a democracy or should newspapers face statutory regulation like TV and radio?

Is having a free press essential to democracy, or should newspapers be subject to statutory regulation like TV and radio?

10) Why is the internet so difficult to regulate?

Because there are so many various platforms and minds on the internet, it is challenging to govern their thoughts.
