semiotics

 1) What did Ferdinand de Saussure suggest are the two parts that make up a sign?

signifier and signified

2) What does ‘polysemic’ mean?
open to interpretation and more than one meaning

3) What does Barthes mean when he suggests signs can become ‘naturalised’?
He means that people can have the same interpretation about an object

4) What are Barthes’ 5 narrative codes? hermeneutic code, prokinetic code, cultural code, connotative code, and symbolic code.

1) Find one examples for each: icon, index and symbol. Provide images or links.

Icon: the Large protagonist being Jordan dunking which shows the heights any player with jordan merchandise can reach.

Index: a player playing basketball.

Symbol: Dunking in the sky without a rim or hoop.

2) Why are icons and indexes so important in media texts?
They are very important because the icon has a physical resemblance to the signified however the index shows what's being represented which makes it essential to dissect a media text or scene.

3) Why might global brands try and avoid symbols in their advertising and marketing?
Company's try and avoid symbols because it might confuse people who are not familiar with the brand which makes it hard to be represented though the media industry.

4) Find an example of a media text (e.g. advert) where the producer has accidentally communicated the wrong meaning using icons, indexes or symbols. Why did the media product fail? (This web feature on bad ads and marketing fails provides some compelling examples).

The icon would be the women getting ready however the symbol would completely challenge the wording of the advert. This is purely based on the fact that the choice of words is questionable because it would be percived as the quote says ' i take a s*** in the pool' this is a failed advert all down to the fact that the media industry wouldn't be able to take the company serious after this disastrous PR error.

5) Find an example of a media text (e.g. advert) that successfully uses icons or indexes to create a message that can be easily understood across the world.

The icon would be the boy looking down in dis pear down at the challenge ahead. This is a successful inspirational advert because it highlights the challenges you can overcome even if the task ahead is scary. The index would be would be to complete the challenge and i personal really like this advert because it connotes a positive attitude which is shown through that quote.

1) What meanings are the audience encouraged to take about the two main characters from the opening of the film?
They are presented to have a negative image and are pictured doing bad things which give the audience an impression that they have bad attitudes and weren't raised right.

2) How does the end of the film emphasise de Saussure’s belief that signs are polysemic – open to interpretation or more than one meaning?
That the Image presented was all wrong and the fact that first impressions are key because of the kind action portrayed at the end of the short film.
